=22pxAirfix 1/76 Type 97 Medium Tank Chi Ha
5th Company, 17th Tank Regiment, Operation Ichi-Go, China, 1943

The Type 97 was the most widely produced Japanese medium tank of World War II, although the armor protection was considered average before WWII. The 57 mm main gun, designed for infantry support, was a carry over from previous tanks. The Type 97's low silhouette and semicircular radio antenna on the turret distinguished the tank from its contemporaries. The crude suspension was derived from the Type 95 Ha-Go light tank, but used six road wheels instead of four.

This Airfix kit has been around since the mid-1970's. It builds up quickly with most of the parts going to the complicated running gear. There are 4 decals, 2 of them lightening bolts for the side of the turret. My Yellow striping clashed with them so I left them off. The tank is built OOB with minor details added to enhance the drivers hatch and tool box.
